Photographer Justice Mukheli’s new and moving series salutes Joburg brand Beautiful Boys

Beautiful Boys is a Joburg-based clothing brand best known for their locally made t-shirts. Photographer Justice Rendani Mukheli spotlights the brand’s quintessential white tee emblazoned with their lettering in a new photo series.

The images were snapped spontaneously on a visit to Tshiawelo, Soweto, and features creative Itumeleng “Solar” Modise. “I drove out to see my mom. I carry my camera with me everywhere I go and had recently bought a Pentax 67ii film camera that I wanted to test out. I was with a friend John Baloyi and his girlfriend Itumeleng, who happened to be wearing a Beautiful Boys t-shirt,” Justice explains.

Justice has a long-standing relationship with the label, which he describes as “fresh and authentically South African”. “The founder Lazi Mathebula and I go way back. He interned with Draft FCB back when I was an art director in 2009. I was so excited to share the images with him and he loved them,” says Justice, and shares the unofficial lookbook. See more from Justice.
