Trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni enjoys a multi-faceted career as a performer, composer and bandleader of numerous ensembles, such as Amandla Freedom Ensemble, a music collective set to release their second album, titled Born To Be Black: A Celebration Of The Conscious Soul later this month.
The recording is a collaborative endeavor between himself, the piano improvisations of Andile Yenana, US-born tenor reedman Salim Washington and South African percussionist Louis Moholo-Moholo.
Ahead of the album drop, we interview Mandla about his commitment to jazz and using music to speak out about the social and cultural politics of South Africa.
