01 Nov Party collective Label Nites are shaping the art of music appreciation in Joburg
Earlier this year, seasoned deejays Clive Mofokeng and Neo Makongoza founded Label Nites, a monthly listening session party in Joburg. Inspired by a shared love for alternative electronic music, the twosome have created a space to showcase the best of production stables from across the globe.
Partygoers can expect to hear an eclectic mix of genres like downtempo, nu-jazz and acid house. They dedicate each session to one label whose music they play over a two-hour long stretch.
“On a typical night out at a club or bar we never have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in what we’re listening to because of the active environment and distractions. Listening to music in an intimate session makes you appreciate it more,” says Neo about the event, which this week takes places in an underground and intimate venue in the city.
The next Label Nite will take place at Shikisha Um’zimba in Illovo on November 3. On the night, they will be showcasing Detroit-based record label Kolour Recordings, and deejay extraordinaire Mvelo. In the lead up to the event co-owner of Kolour Recordings, Oscar P has graciously gifted our ears with a abstract house mix. Press play on it below.
