The term “ke Dezembers boss!” is synonymous with this time of year, in which we can all chill and take stock of the year that was. Whether it’s the joys of relaxing or getting a bonus, or the taste of Ultra Mel custard on Christmas, the festive brings a certain vibe in the air.
Illustrators Bongani Gwala and Ngaka Marman rounded up their favourite festive ingredients and drinks; that remind us ukuba zi big days and the time to celebrate is here.
Bongani Gwala, a Joburg-based pattern designer captures the mood of an old school kasi family gathering with his colourful illustrations. And includes depictions of ingredients like ground ginger for igamere, Snowflake Baking Flour for desserts and even the goat that will be slaughtered to feed the family.
What is your favourite thing about the festive season?
The freedom in spirit of the people around me, it feeds my creativity.
What inspired these illustrations?
With these illustrations, I want to capture what I most look forward to this December.
Designer and art director Ngaka Marman, who is currently freelancing, captures the nostalgia of the iconic local dish, custard and jelly dessert, and snacks Bakers Choice Assorted Biscuits. Ngaka is based in Kagiso and says his festive season is perfect if he can spend time with family and travel.
What is your favourtie thing about the festive season?
My favourite element of the festive season is the excitement of new beginnings and enjoying good food and company while spending time with my family.
What inspired your work?
My passion is advertising and ux/ui design education but these illustrations were inspired by my family. The best time for me is when I can go to church, spend time with them and travel.
