Blackboard Africa is a youth Non-Profit Company (NPC) based in Johannesburg, Gauteng. The organisation was created by Amonge Sinxoto and Zingisa Socikwa, at the age of 15 and 23 respectively. Later, the team welcomed Mpumi Sinxoto, its creative director.
Officially registered in 2017, the team at Blackboard Africa are all about inspiring new ways of creative thinking. Through activating spaces for the sharing of ideas and intriguing creative appetites through interactive conversations, music, spoken word, art, and the sharing of beautiful stories, Blackboard Africa seeks to inspire youth innovation in order to tackle Africa’s complex challenges. The ultimate goal, the team explains, is to liberate thinking towards a unified Africa.
Their name uses the metaphor of a blackboard to inspire African youth – tough and resilient surfaces that commit themselves to new ways of thinking, collaborating, and learning. To date, Blackboard has reached readers across the country, struck up partnerships with The Market Theatre, curated a youth supplement for Destiny magazine, and enjoyed interviews on local radio stations and in various publications. The team have also released a mini-documentary on the Blackboard story which you can watch over on their website. Though the power of collaboration and the celebration of new, creative ways of thinking, Blackboard Africa are changing the creative landscape. Certainly, they’re a group to watch.
