Nikiwe Dlova is a hair artist and stylist that creates beautiful, intricate, gravity defying pieces of art that happen to go on your head! Her work is whimsical and beautiful, and she has become known for her styling – both for shoots and also for individual clients. She walks us through some of her fave images and why she loves them so much.
“This series was a follow up to The uniform crown-series with my cousins. I had FOMO so I had to be part of the series as well. It was great content for Youth Month but I also feel this work is timeless as it tells a story of what we’re still struggling with in 2018,” she says.
“I love this image, it captures my soul; it makes me happy.”

“This image is so artistic, and I wanted to make a collage that showcases my love for wool, wool hairstyles and woven grass. The colours complemented each other so well and this was the result. This was random, I didn’t have a concept, I just combined all the elements I mentioned and came up with this image. My caption was ‘Self Expression is Art’.”
“I love this series. It was all about allowing hair expression at schools. It was inspired by pupils of Pretoria Girls High School who protested against their school conduct about black hair. I used my cousins as models and they did a great job.”
“This was an amazing collaboration with Ford Figo and other talented creatives. I designed headpieces for Rhea Blek’s Kam’zolo music video. I am grateful for the opportunity to showcase how you can play around with your hair – even if you have short hair.
“This is a new expansion for OwnURcrown — I design headpiece accessories for events, productions, editorials etc, which can be hired or bought.”
