31 Oct Grit and Beauty – A Grunge Revival
In these illustrations we see beauty and grit beautifully consolidated – made complementary and pleasant to the eye. “I strive to create a balance between beauty and grittiness,” says illustrator and graphic designer, Rob Crawford. This Joburg-based artist says he is inspired by the grunge movement of the 90’s and uses bold, hand lines in ink and layers them with texture and bright colours using digital tools to bring out the same energy.
“What makes my art special is its energy and contrast, but because it’s heavily graphic (in a comic book sense) in nature it is bold and I feel like it jumps off the screen or page when you look at it.”
Rob says drawing is a passion he’s had his whole life. It is an outlet that captures and documents his everyday experiences.
He has created work for Vega School, Toni Glass, Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream and Money Wit. You can check out more of his work on his website, To The Bone.
