Design-Focused Hotel Opens in Downtown Cape Town

Gorgeous George, the latest addition to downtown Cape Town, was created out of two beautifully restored heritage buildings and will be the first Cape Town hotel to join the Design Hotels collection.

Gorgeous George is a refined inner-city space where locals and seasoned travellers can come together.

The hotel features a unique blend of Art Deco and a New Edwardian style that was prominent in the 1940s. The biggest challenge was marrying two buildings that had very different heights but a tower with a rooftop pool, bar and restaurant helped bring it all together.

“We wanted to take this fantastic conjoined building that has a rich history of Cape Town and create a modern, timeless hotel using South African designers as part of the design DNA,” says international award-winning interior designer Tristan du Plessis, who was responsible for the hotel’s interior.

Du Plessis carefully selected South African art pieces and furniture that would capture the chic look and feel of Cape Town’s downtime neighbourhood. The hotel features decor and lighting from Dokter and Misses, Gregor Jenkin, Studio 19, David Krynauw and Douglas&Co. There are also murals by David Brits and Lucie De Motencourt.

Gorgeous George can be found in St George’s Mall and is a short walk away from Long, Bree and Kloof streets.
