Lethabo Huma / Women Illustrators To Watch

We are currently looking at some of Africa’s top female illustrators. Here we take a look at Lethabo Huma. She shares some of her favourite illustrations and the stories behind their creation. Looking at the emotion and moment that piece was created in.

OUCH! – Muse: Reece King

OUCH piece by Lethabo HumaMy life was practically upside down when I created this. I was losing in all aspects of my life. “OUCH!” was the best way I could describe how I felt about everything that was happening in my life at the time.

Connect

Art piece called Connect by Lethabo HumaThis piece is an expression of gratitude to all the people who I am close / deeply connected to.

Time&Mind – Muse: Earl Sweatshirt

Time&Mind piece by Lethabo Huma inspired by Earl SweatshirtThis piece was inspired by a song titled “Grief” by Earl Sweatshirt. There’s a part in the song where he says: “ I just want my time and my mind intact. ‘Cause when they both gone , you can’t buy ‘em back”.

I deeply resonated with what he said because I was feeling drained and was running out of time to complete certain tasks. That was a pretty stressful week!

Undone – Muse : Lew Caine

Undone illustration by Lethabo HumaThis was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend about how men are taught to suppress their emotions from a very early age and how damaging that can be emotionally and psychologically.

Untitled

An illustration by Lethabo Huma called untitledI really enjoyed creating this. I was simply experimenting with colour and shapes.
