We are currently looking at some of Africa’s top female illustrators. Here we take a look at Lethabo Huma. She shares some of her favourite illustrations and the stories behind their creation. Looking at the emotion and moment that piece was created in.
OUCH! – Muse: Reece King
My life was practically upside down when I created this. I was losing in all aspects of my life. “OUCH!” was the best way I could describe how I felt about everything that was happening in my life at the time.
This piece is an expression of gratitude to all the people who I am close / deeply connected to.
Time&Mind – Muse: Earl Sweatshirt
This piece was inspired by a song titled “Grief” by Earl Sweatshirt. There’s a part in the song where he says: “ I just want my time and my mind intact. ‘Cause when they both gone , you can’t buy ‘em back”.
I deeply resonated with what he said because I was feeling drained and was running out of time to complete certain tasks. That was a pretty stressful week!
Undone – Muse : Lew Caine
This was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend about how men are taught to suppress their emotions from a very early age and how damaging that can be emotionally and psychologically.
I really enjoyed creating this. I was simply experimenting with colour and shapes.
