Cape Town-based store F I E L D S, founded by Mikael Hanan is a men’s clothing store that provides a wardrobe for men with pieces that can be layered and collected over a number of years.
F I E L D S aims to explore the aspects of a man’s identity. They have grouped these aspects as Soul, encompassing contemplation, purity, solace and integrity; Art, including work, creativity, leadership and the meaningful impact your art can make; and Outdoor, the tactile, fresh air, physicality and nature play.
During the creation of the visual identity for F I E L D S, the founder(s) were attracted to the significance and practical use behind totems, the manner in which they were used in the identification, crystallisation and communication of the key features of a group, in which individuals part of the group and outsiders could come together.
Produced in natural yarns from across South Africa, F I E L D S clothing is created for men to part-take in travels from home to the workplace, the streets to the outdoors, and in the most important cities of the world.
The wool and mohair used in the brand’s garments are Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) as well as OKEO-TEX Standard 100 certified, and can be traced back to the source with almost all certified as ‘mules-free’. More than 85% of the cotton sourced and used was Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the brand aims for this to be at 100% by 2022.
“We aim to showcase the high-standard and quality that Southern African yarn, spinners and factory partners bring through their manufacturing. It is also important to us that we facilitate local community support and industry growth.” – F I E L D S Store
Their first collection is about reaching out and developing new connections. The brand aims to bridge the divide from Cape Town to the globe and to start fresh relationships that will bear fruit for the future. They believe that the creativity and often underestimated quality products of Africa should be shared.
Each season, the brand will collaborate with Africans whose message, vision and visual themes resonate with those of the F I E L D S store. For their first collection, the brand collaborated with artists Themba Khumalo and Michael Chandler.
