Our #Canonx10and5 winner for July is a retired banker and self-taught photographer based in Johannesburg. Jan Van Heerden first picked up a camera in March 2013, a Canon 7D which helped him hone his obvious photography skills. Jan Van Heerden’s picture caught our attention the second we saw it on our Instagram feed. He used different tones of grey, black and white to create a compelling photograph of a man- who’s eyes tell a story of their own.
“My hobbies include painting and carpentry, but I was drawn to photography the most. Photography is a great stimulant for the mind, one starts to look at things differently. I did not study photography, in fact, I was overwhelmed when I held the camera for the first time,” he says.
“I attended a 1-hour introduction course in photography, which resulted in me joining a photography club – something which was of great benefit for me. YouTube photographic channels are also a fantastic medium to learn from.”
I was nominated as club photographer of the year in 2014 and 2015. My photos were published in a newspaper and some of them were accepted for an exhibition.
Jan is trying to document the beauty of Johannesburg, as well as the magnificent world-class architecture of the city. He plans on starting a webpage where he can sell some of his photography, and publish a coffee table book.
