10and5 is dedicated to bringing you talent from across the South African creative industry by providing a platform for emerging creatives to showcase their work to a wider audience. Driven by this dedication, we have put together a new initiative, the Artist Acceleration and Exposure Programme (A3E), which aims to upskill emerging artists across South Africa, offers a platform for talented artists to reach new markets, and helps them break into the art scene.
Alecia Van Rooyen is an upcoming artist whose work takes a critical view of how humanity perceives the human body, or simply put, how humanity perceives the self.
By referring to the subjective experiences of fragmentation, narcissism, and anxiety, Van Rooyen explores the relation between the picture of the body and the concept of the self. Through our bodies we experience the universe; every human experience is distinctive. Confronting an image of the artist’s own body as with a mirror reflection allows her to confront personal fears which fragment her self-perception.
While her paintings are self-portraits, Van Rooyen has intentionally removed any trace of identity which allows all spectators to identify with the human body represented to them; by doing so, she hopes to evoke subjective bodily experiences in those who view her art.
