19 Sep To Be a Woman in South Africa Today – A Fictional Photo Story of Homage
Nicole Samuels presents her latest body of work ‘To Be a Woman in South Africa Today – A Fictional Photo Story of Homage’. After the publishing of Musing Bloom in 2016, Samuels photographed muse and singer Tsholofelo Mapisa.
For Samuels, this form of art speaks in symbolism during a time where masculinity is weaponised in gender-based violence against womxn.
“These images speak in various forms, symbolically, deeply requiring the viewer or the spectator to deconstruct each element to discover the mirror of society hidden in the image. This is a humble homage to the women of South Africa who stand tall as survivors, daughters, sisters, mothers, grandmothers and revolutionaries,” she says.
