Dickies fan and collector Prince Modtoane, also known as Problem Child, recently put together a self-funded project in collaboration with renowned photographer Kgomotso Neto. The project, titled Born In America explores the ways in which the American clothing brand has influenced his aesthetic as a young South African.
Problem Child wanted to use the American flag as the backdrop for the shoot, but he chose to keep it simple and give it a local context.
“I wanted to create something for the culture. I have been thrifting; finding particular rare garments which I wanted to showcase – that’s basically how this project came about.” he said.
The collection showcased in the lookbook is made up of some of his favourite repaired and reworked Dickies items that he has collected over the years. A few of the pieces; such as the Dickies tote bag and the patchwork pants, are items which have been personalized by Problem Child.
