In light of the recent Corona Virus outbreak and news of the government banning social gatherings of groups in large numbers, event organisers have taken it upon themselves to cancel or postpone events that were scheduled to take place in the next coming weeks and/or months. These decisions have been made to reduce the spread of the virus and ensure the health and safety of event-goers and production teams.
We have listed some art and design events that have unfortunately been affected by COVID-19:
Absa L’Atelier Art Competition
Absa Group Limited has announced that the annual Absa L’Atelier Art Competition has been postponed until further notice. The much-anticipated pan-Africa art competition was scheduled to open to participants from 12 African countries on 1 April 2020, with the prize giving to take place in September 2020.
In addition, the Absa Art Gallery in Johannesburg will be closed until further notice.
Amex Winter Sculpture Fair
On Tuesday, the Winter Sculpture Fair had announced that this year’s fair has unfortunately been postponed due to the unfolding events. The 8th annual fair was scheduled to take place from 9-10 May at the Nirox Sculpture Park. A new date will be confirmed on their website and social media pages.
The premier decor and design show that was set to take place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 22-24 May, however, it has been announced that the show has been pushed back and will now take place from 24-26 July.
The show hosts Africa’s rich combination of tradition, modernity and contemporary design innovation by showcasing the best interior and decor design brands from local and international designers.
Art Battle South Africa
A number of Art Battle events in different parts of the world have been postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Art Battle made an announcement on their website that the Johannesburg event, which was set to take place on the 27th of March, has been canceled. Cape Town’s leg of the event which has been scheduled for the 7th of May may be reinstated depending on local conditions.
1000 Drawings Festival of Art
The art-for-charity initiative, which forms part of the Makers Valley Festival, was scheduled to take place from 27-29 March at Victoria Yards, Johannesburg. Although a new date has not been confirmed, organisers have shared that they anticipate the event will go ahead in a few months.
