12 Oct Sindiso Khumalo Named ‘Best Independent Designer’ at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards 2020
2020 has proven to be an incredible year for fashion designer, Sindiso Khumalo after she was shortlisted as a finalist for the prestigious LVMH earlier this year, she has recently been awarded the ‘Best Independent Designer Award’ at this year’s Green Carpet Fashion Awards. The fourth annual awards show, which was held virtually and streamed live on YouTube, was hosted by Milano Fashion Week and Eco-Age.
Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, who presented the Independent Designer Award, noted that 16 independent designers who have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to the fashion industry, with a focus on sustainable practices, were considered for the accolade. Sindiso Khumalo was named the winner shortly after this, and in her acceptance speech, she shared: “I started in Milan Fashion Week four years ago, and I would not be here today without the immense opportunities Milan Fashion Week has offered our brand.”
“I dedicate this award to the amazing artisans I work with in Burkina Faso, Barrydale, KwaZulu-Natal, and Cape Town. I started my brand with the premise of being a modern-day Robin Hood, to make luxury clothing that will eventually help the poorest and most vulnerable in our society, to create a change for our continent and to create a new future for our youth. Thank you so much, this award reaffirms that dream, and thank Eco-Age for believing in our African dream,” she closed off.
The self-titled womenswear brand of a South African-born, London-based textile and fashion designer encompasses bold, graphic prints with a sophisticated, minimalist construction. Founder and designer, Sindiso Khumalo grew up in South Africa and first studied Architecture at UCT before becoming the one-to-watch in the fashion industry.
