CREATIVE WOMEN SPOTLIGHT: OH MY GOSS

Cape-Town-based jewellery brand Oh My Goss creates custom jewellery pieces, designed for either your everyday look or special occasion. Most popular, are the reworked family heirlooms and old gemstones, for which each jewellery piece is handcrafted from a mix of new, recycled and reclaimed metals. There are so many benefits to repurposing an old piece of jewellery rather than buying something brand new, the primary one being the preservation of a special moment that can last a lifetime – and in this case, through a process of re-birth.

Grace Goss is a formally trained goldsmith, who graduated from the Stellenbosch University. After her studies, she completed a two year apprenticeship and was subsequently left inspired to started her own brand, Oh My Goss. We asked her to share more about the team behind the brand she founded from scratch.

Here’s what she had to say:

” I am a one-woman team, and have been building Oh My Goss this way since the beginning. But, there are many incredible individuals who contribute to my process. Some of these cool people are the gemstone supplier, the stone setter, the diamond grader and the team who does my casting (when I cast) ”

” All Oh My Goss pieces are handmade in my atelier in the heart of Cape Town – something I am very transparent about as I believe that it’s important for people to know where their jewellery is coming from. My workshop space is on Bree Street, in an unassuming building filled with other artists ”

The jewellery range developed in collaboration with/for Studio Candor started with the sterling silver safety pin ring that has become ‘The Candor Ring’ and is worn by every member of the Studio Candor team. The full range is made of brass and sterling silver which is then set with natural gemstones that fit the Candor colour palette. These gemstones include peridot, citrine, iolite and pink amethyst.

We asked Grace about any exciting news in store for her brand.

Here’s what she had to say:

” Exciting plans for my brand! For starters, a website. Otherwise, I am very slowly developing a range of fitted Oh My Goss wedding bands in gold and platinum – these are based on designs that I have made over the last 18 months. The last exciting thing is a new jewellery range I am working on, that is based on the body of work I developed in my fourth year of studies ”
