[caption id="attachment_18099" align="aligncenter" width="560" caption="Photo by Jonx Pillemer"]artist freddy sam and kids photo by jonx pillemer[/caption] The I ART SA Community Mural Project, a collaboration between /A WORD OF ART and adidas Originals, aims to promote and celebrate local artists, mural art and the original culture found within the communities we interact in. Starting in Woodstock and then moving on to Soweto, thirteen artists have been selected and assigned one wall per venue and will create public art to a brief, either I ART WOODSTOCK or I ART SOWETO. The entire process is to be documented through video and stills becoming an exhibition. Sales of the prints will go towards raising funds for the community art project WRITE ON AFRICA to paint a school in the area. Other elements to the initiative include a ‘zine’ filled with relevant content that will be distributed for free around the country and a concert, a creative collaboration between local musicians. Visit the project website to find maps directing you to the murals, photos, videos, artist statements and profiles. With its roots in South Africa, the future plan for the project is for it to eventually become global. The launch exhibition will be held at the Toffie Festival this week (24 – 26 March) featuring the I ART WOODSTOCK artists: 35- Ten 73, Pavement Special, Black Koki, Boamistura (Madrid), Dathina Mzayiya, Freddy Sam, Fuzzy Slippers, Jeremy Puren, Jonx Pillemer, Linsay Levendall of Bison, Paul Senyol, Rowan Pybus at Makhulu and Xanele. We'll be sure to keep you up to date with upcoming I ART SA events including a braai day and party in April and the I ART SOWETO exhibition in September.
Senyol,-Southey,-Mackay Bruce Mackay, Justin Southey and Paul Senyol are no strangers to Between 10and5. Their individual art, illustration and design has been shown a few times here but never the place where it all originates. The three artists share a studio and the blend of their unique styles makes it an inspiring place to visit. And they'll offer you lunch.
