Loftus Versfeld Stadium became the stage for a landmark moment in South African music on 29 August, when DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, better known as the Scorpion Kings, performed to a sold-out crowd of 50 000.

The show, Betway Presents Scorpion Kings Live with Friends, staged in partnership with Metro FM and Converse, marked the largest Amapiano concert ever hosted in South Africa.
Performing on a 360-degree stage, the duo delivered a set that traced the evolution of their sound, backed by a full band, striking visuals and choreography directed by Soweto’s Finest.

The line-up featured some of the biggest names in African music. Ami Faku, Msaki, Makhadzi, Kamo Mphela, Focalistic, Sjava, Njelic, Uhuru, Young Stunna, Nkosazana Daughter, Daliwonga, Cassper Nyovest, Kwesta, Mlindo the Vocalist and many more joined the Kings on stage. The pair also honoured veteran musician Caiphus Semenya and paid tribute to Amapiano artists who have passed away.
International Afrobeats star Davido made an appearance, underscoring the growing global reach of Amapiano and its close ties to other African genres.

The show opened with a prayer from DJ Maphorisa’s mother and was carried by a blend of performances ranging from soulful ballads to high-energy dance sets. The Grammy award-winning choir Amazwi8 added a powerful choral dimension, while music director JR Bogopa and creative director James Frank ensured seamless production.

For many, the concert was a reminder of how far Amapiano has come since emerging from township streets less than a decade ago. Once a grassroots movement, the genre now commands stadium stages and international collaborations, with the Scorpion Kings recognised as two of its leading figures.

“Saturday night was more than a performance,” organisers said.
“It was a moment that highlighted South African music’s ability to lead on the world stage.”
The scale of the event, from audience numbers to the range of artists involved, set a new benchmark for live shows in the country.
