End of an Era: MTV Pulls the Plug on Its Music Channels After 44 Years

MTV is shutting down five music channels by 2025, ending 40 years of influence on global and South African music culture.

Iconic music television channel MTV is set to shut down five of its dedicated music channels globally by 31 December 2025. MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will stop broadcasting as Paramount Global focuses on digital platforms and streaming services, responding to changing viewer habits and rising costs.

For over 40 years, MTV has been more than a television channel. It has shaped music, youth culture, and pop culture around the world. From music videos that defined generations to shows that introduced new sounds and styles, MTV helped people discover music in exciting and unforgettable ways.

In South Africa, MTV gave local talent a platform to shine. Artists and presenters used the channel as a springboard to build careers both at home and internationally. Bonang Matheba, who hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards pre-show, and Moozlie, who won the MTV Base VJ Search, are just a few examples of South Africans who found opportunities through MTV. The channel inspired many young people to pursue careers in media, entertainment, and the creative industries.
