Big Queen on Small Street: Meji Meji Brings Jozi Streets to Life

Meji Meji’s Big Queen on Small Street celebrates confidence, Jozi street culture, and community through fashion and film.

Meji Meji’s Big Queen on Small Street steps into the spotlight with full energy. The latest collection launched alongside a short film that captures women bringing colour, wit, and attitude to everyday streets in Johannesburg.

If you grew up watching Skhothanes flex on pavements or the city comedians, those crazy entertainers, turn street corners into performance stages, then you understand Meji Meji. It’s the mix of laughter, performance, and pure confidence that makes you stop mid-taxi ride to take it all in.

The brand also nods to aunts with razor-cut hairstyles and black lip liners, and to the sound of kwaito still booming from a Zola Budd taxi weaving through traffic. Nostalgia is stitched into every outfit, turning pavements into stages and making everyday movement feel cinematic.

Founded in 2020, Meji Meji means “two by two.” The name reflects connection, doubling joy, and doubling pride. The Big Girl on Small Street project captures that spirit, showing that even on small streets, confidence and creativity can feel big.

The film and collection tap into South Africa’s creative nostalgia. They reference the Skhothane era, street comedians, and early 2000s style, remixing memory and performance into something bold and contemporary. It’s a love letter to women with small budgets but big dreams, who mix thrift with attitude and turn sidewalks into catwalks.

Meji Meji shows that creativity is never isolated. It comes from community, conversation, and shared stories. The project celebrates ubuntu, reminding viewers that even if the street you walk on is small, your confidence should always be big.
