Cape Town’s breaking scene turned up the heat this past weekend as dancers battled it out for a spot in the Red Bull BC One South Africa National Final. After an intense showdown, Nina “Funky Child” Petersen and Charlton “B-Boy Chillo” Conradie came out on top, securing their place in the next stage of the competition.
Nina, a 19-year-old B-Girl from Cape Town, impressed with a freestyle-heavy approach, blending technical skill with raw energy. Reflecting on her win, she shared, “I’m going into the National Finals with a more flexible approach. I used to have sets and would get frustrated if I didn’t hit them perfectly. This time, I’m going to train more—but more importantly, be present in the moment on the national stage.”

For Charlton, also known as B-Boy Chillo, this victory has been a long time coming. The 31-year-old from Mitchells Plain has been competing for five years, with four top-16 finishes under his belt. This time, his mix of power moves and intricate footwork set him apart. “I’ll be training more on my power moves and footwork ahead of the National Finals,” he said, ready to push his limits even further.
Red Bull BC One South Africa 2025 is in full swing, with cyphers in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town leading up to the National Final. With Nina and Chillo now in the mix, the competition is heating up. Will they take it all the way? The battle continues at the National Finals on March 29, 2025.
