A Cultural Landmark in Braamfontein
Braamfontein, known for its dynamic energy and reputation as a hotspot for Gen Z socializing, now boasts a striking new visual landmark courtesy of Karabo Poppy. The mural adorns one of the city’s coolest venues, where fans gathered to celebrate Blxckie’s latest release—an event hailed as one of the most exciting hip-hop launches of the year.

A Story Told Through Art
Karabo Poppy’s mural is more than just a striking visual; it’s a deeply personal depiction of Blxckie’s journey, tracing his path from his roots in Durban to international recognition. The artwork skillfully combines literal and symbolic elements, inviting viewers to unpack its layers and engage with the narrative of a young artist’s rise to prominence.
The mural location is a building with many windows, which is different from my usual flat surfaces. This challenge forced me to think differently and brought out a new and interesting way to create a narrative with individual illustrations rather than a single, cohesive image. I also enjoyed considering the open space at the top of the building as part of the mural, which seldom happens but adds more dimensions to the piece.“-Karabo Poppy

On her experience of contributing to Braamfontein’s vibrant creative scene, she added, “It is such an honour to place a creative mark on one of the creative hubs of South Africa. The potential for globally impactful art in Braam is overflowing, and being part of that community feels like the highest honour.”

Poppy’s mural not only pays tribute to Blxckie’s journey but also stands as a testament to her ability to blend storytelling with striking visuals, further cementing her status as one of South Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists.
