South African visual artist Lulama ‘Wolf’ Mlambo has made waves by becoming the first South African—and the first black female South African artist—to collaborate with the iconic Danish audio brand Bang & Olufsen. This groundbreaking partnership is part of the brand’s prestigious “Art of A9” series, which transforms the Beosound A9 speaker into a canvas for some of the world’s most captivating visual artists.
Lulama Wolf, known for her modern neo-expressionist style, was spotlighted at Design Indaba and has now brought her unique artistic vision to the global stage through this collaboration. Her work, deeply rooted in classical themes of art and music, shines in this project. “I was looking for simple things that bring you joy in so many ways,” Lulama shares. “The femininity in jazz and dance, and the improvisation of its heartbeat, all come together in this piece.”
The “Art of A9” series is celebrated for turning the sleek, circular Beosound A9 speaker into a collector’s item, with past collaborations featuring heavyweights like John Legend, David Lynch, and Stine Goya. Each piece in the series is a limited-edition artwork, available in small batches, making them highly sought after by art and music lovers alike.
Lulama’s contribution to the series not only showcases her talent on an international platform but also cements her place in history as a trailblazer in South African art. The limited-edition Beosound A9, customised by Lulama, is set to be auctioned in August 2024, offering a rare opportunity for collectors to own a piece of contemporary African art intertwined with cutting-edge design and technology.
This collaboration was officially unveiled at 100% Design Africa at Decorex Joburg in early August, marking a significant milestone in Lulama’s career and adding a fresh, vibrant perspective to Bang & Olufsen’s “Art of A9” series.
