Opportunity radar: Live Music Lab 2026 Opens Applications for Joburg Youth

Bassline opens applications for Live Music Lab 2026, a fully funded programme training Joburg youth for careers in live music.

The live music industry runs on more than artists and applause. Behind every concert, festival, and tour is a team of organisers, managers, technicians, and coordinators making it all happen.

In 2026, Bassline opens applications for the third edition of Live Music Lab, its fully funded training programme for young people looking to build careers behind the scenes of the music industry.

Launched in 2024 in collaboration with the French Institute of South Africa, the programme has grown into a cornerstone of Bassline’s training ecosystem. This year, it returns with expanded partnerships, delivered in collaboration with the National Arts Council (NAC) and the Music In Africa Foundation through its NEFCISA programme under the Social Employment Fund.

Live Music Lab 2026 will select 10 Johannesburg-based participants for an intensive three-month programme, combining classroom learning with real-world production experience. Applications open on 15 January 2026 and close on 15 February 2026, or once 100 applications have been received.

The programme includes 60 hours of classroom training from 2 to 30 March, followed by practical placements across Bassline’s live projects from April to June. Participants will work directly on major live music events including Rhythmic Clash, Bassline Fest, Fête de la Musique, and the Africa Rising Music Conference.

Training focuses on entry-level pathways in concert promotion, artist management, technical production, stage and backstage management, artist wellness, and South African music history. Learners are guided by experienced professionals and gain hands-on exposure by shadowing teams during event build-ups and live productions.

The programme is open to unemployed youth aged 18–25, based in Johannesburg, with a Matric certificate. Selection prioritises motivated applicants who are solution-driven, collaborative, and interested in building sustainable careers in the live music sector. In line with Bassline’s gender targets, the cohort aims for 70% female participation.

How to apply:
Applications must be completed online at https://bassline.co.za/. Applicants will be required to submit a 350-word motivation, certified documents, and a short video pitch.

Selected applicants will be notified on 19 February 2026.
