Still Rising: Tyla Wins Favourite Afrobeats Artist at 2025 AMAs

Tyla does it again.

Last night, Tyla walked away with the Favourite Afrobeats Artist award at the 2025 American Music Awards in Las Vegas. She’s the first South African, and the first woman, to ever win in this category since it was introduced in 2022. Big moment.

She was up against some of the biggest names in the game: Wizkid, Rema, Tems and Asake. But it was Tyla’s name that came out on top.

The win has sparked debate online about where exactly her music sits. Is it Afrobeats? Is it R&B? There’s also that signature amapiano flavour running through her sound. Whatever the label, Tyla’s genre-blending is clearly hitting home, everywhere.

It’s been a huge year for her. Back in Feb, she won a Grammy for Best African Music Performance with her global hit “Water.” Her self-titled debut album dropped in 2024 and made it to No. 24 on the US Billboard 200 chart. “Water” also reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest ever for a South African solo artist.

Her win at the AMAs is another reminder that SA has something to offer the world. And her success shows just how much love there is right now for African artists on global stages.

The AMAs were hosted by J.Lo, and it was a BIG night for Billie Eilish, who swept all seven categories she was nominated for, including the top awards – Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.

But for us, all eyes were on Tyla. And she made it count.
