Jimmy Nevis releases “PREY” in response to gender-based violence

Jimmy Nevis releases “PREY”, a new single and music video responding to gender-based violence in South Africa and recent protest movements.

South African singer and producer Jimmy Nevis has released a new single, “PREY”, alongside a music video that responds to ongoing conversations around gender-based violence in South Africa.

The track was written in solidarity with women who continue to speak out against violence and injustice. It draws on recent protest action across the country, including demonstrations led by Women For Change, where calls for accountability and systemic change have taken centre stage.

“PREY” moves between alternative-pop and stripped-back songwriting. The focus remains on the subject matter, with the lyrics addressing both the reality of violence and the silence that often surrounds it.

“PREY is about recognising a reality that too many women face every day,” says Nevis.

“As artists we have a responsibility to reflect the times we live in. This song is my way of standing in solidarity and reminding people that the conversation around gender-based violence cannot fade.”

The music video extends this approach. It draws from the visual language of protest, with a group of women dressed in black positioned across a stark, open space. The imagery echoes acts of silent protest and collective mourning, while Nevis performs among them. The result is a restrained but direct visual response to the subject matter.

“PREY” was also performed live for the first time during Cape Town International Jazz Festival on 28 March 2026, shortly after its release. The performance marked an early public moment for the track within a wider programme of events taking place during Jazz Week in the city.

With this release, Nevis adds to a growing body of work by South African artists engaging directly with social issues. “PREY” positions music as both expression and response, contributing to a wider conversation that continues to unfold across the country.
