Got a Point of View? Enter the Art of Photography

OPPORTUNITY RADAR: CALLING ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS.

The seventh Orms x Canon Promenade Exhibition is calling on South African photographers to submit their work for a chance to win a share of R100,000 in prizes and have their photograph displayed as part of a large-scale outdoor exhibition.

For the past six years, the Sea Point Promenade has been turning photography into a public experience, with selected works displayed along one of Cape Town’s busiest and most recognisable public spaces.

Now in its seventh edition, the Orms x Canon Promenade Exhibition is back with this year’s theme, The Art of Photography.

The competition asks a simple question: when does a photograph become art?

Rather than looking for a particular subject or photographic style, the competition is looking for photographers with a clear creative point of view. Entries can include portraiture, landscapes, still life, architecture, abstract or conceptual photography or something that sits somewhere in between.

What matters is the intention behind the image and what the photographer brings to it.

The organisers are looking for photographs that demonstrate thought through composition, light, colour, perspective, subject, timing and editing. The image could communicate an idea, create an atmosphere, tell a story or simply offer a different way of looking at an ordinary moment.

There are three prizes up for grabs, with a total value of R100,000.

First prize, valued at R65,000, includes a Canon EOS R8 body with an RF 28–70mm f/2.8 lens and a R10,000 ORMS Print Room voucher.

Second prize, valued at R20,000, includes a Canon EOS R50 Creator Kit and a R5,000 ORMS Print Room voucher.

Third prize, valued at R15,000, includes a Canon PowerShot V1 and a R5,000 ORMS Print Room voucher.

But the prize money and gear are not the only opportunity. Twenty photographs will be selected for a large-scale outdoor exhibition along the Sea Point Promenade, giving the photographers behind them the chance to have their work experienced by the thousands of people who use the promenade.

The competition has previously featured 120 photographers and received tens of thousands of entries, with more than half a million rand in prizes awarded over its six-year history.

This year’s exhibition continues that focus on bringing South African photography out of the screen and into the public landscape.

If you’re a photographer with something to say through your images, this is your chance to show people how you see the world.

To keep the images consistent, we are only accepting LANDSCAPE format. Upload your images in JPEG format, no larger than 5MB each.
