Celebrating Art, Heritage, and Creativity
Archive has unveiled The Artist Project, a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to championing local art and creativity. This visionary platform makes its debut today, Thursday, December 5th, at Archive Collective’s flagship store on Bree Street, Cape Town, during the iconic First Thursday event.
Transforming its space into a vibrant hub for art, design, and community, Archive launches its first product collaboration, bringing together the beloved South African brand Grasshoppers and Cape Town-based artist Ziyaad Samsodien.
The Artist Project: A Platform for Creative Expression
Since its inception in 2016, Archive has been a cornerstone of South Africa’s streetwear culture, promoting authentic expressions of creativity. The Artist Project solidifies this mission, offering a platform to spotlight homegrown artistry.
For its inaugural collaboration, Archive partnered with Grasshoppers—a name synonymous with South African craftsmanship—and Ziyaad Samsodien of design studio Flying Duck. This fusion of heritage and innovation reimagines the timeless appeal of Grasshoppers through a fresh, contemporary lens.
Heritage-Inspired Design
Drawing inspiration from the Oudtshoorn region, the birthplace of Grasshoppers, Ziyaad Samsodien’s designs celebrate the area’s rich biodiversity and natural beauty. The leopard tortoise shell, Knysna dwarf chameleon, and Swartberg mountain ranges all find expression in the collection, seamlessly blending South African heritage with modern creative storytelling.
Each shoe is more than just footwear—it’s a piece of art. The collaboration bridges tradition and innovation, showcasing the enduring relevance of a local brand beloved across generations.
Craftsmanship Rooted in Community
Grasshoppers has long stood as a symbol of South African pride. Manufactured in the Southern Cape towns of Great Brak River and Oudtshoorn, the brand continues to support local artisans, many of whom are third-generation craftsmen. Producing over 800,000 pairs annually, Grasshoppers remains a unifying emblem that transcends age, social, and economic divides.
Join the Celebration
This collaboration not only pays homage to South Africa’s rich cultural heritage but also highlights the power of local creativity. By bringing together Grasshoppers’ timeless craftsmanship and Ziyaad Samsodien’s innovative designs, The Artist Project marks a new chapter for Archive and South African streetwear.
