Big Names in Animation Hit Cape Town Fest

As excitement mounts for the upcoming Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) on April 27th and 28th, South African animators and digital creators are gearing up for an extraordinary opportunity to gain insights from some of the industry’s most distinguished figures. This year’s festival promises an exceptional line-up of international speakers who will share their expertise and offer behind-the-scenes glimpses into the world of animation.

Troy Quane, the acclaimed Director of the 2024 Academy Award-nominated Best Animated Feature, Nimona, is set to captivate audiences with an exclusive look at the making of this cinematic masterpiece. Known for his stellar work on major studio productions such as Spies in Disguise, featuring Hollywood heavyweights Will Smith and Tom Holland, Quane’s presentation is sure to provide invaluable insights into the creative process behind some of the most beloved animated films of our time.

But the excitement doesn’t end there. Menna Hamdy, Assistant Director of Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire episode 1st Totem Problems and Art Director at Giraffics studio, will shed light on Egypt’s burgeoning animation industry. Kizazi Moto stands as a groundbreaking animated sci-fi anthology, highlighting ten visionary tales inspired by Africa’s rich cultural heritage and future aspirations. Executive produced by Oscar®-winning director Peter Ramsey, these captivating short films offer a fresh perspective on African storytelling and innovation.

Hamdy’s presentation promises to be a highlight of the festival, offering attendees a rare glimpse into her multifaceted role as a concept artist, illustrator, and Assistant Director. Her firsthand accounts of navigating the creative landscape are bound to inspire aspiring animators and digital artists alike.

Attendees will also have the privilege of hearing from Esther Pearl and Clyde Beech, the creative minds behind the animated titles of the highly anticipated film Boy Kills World.

Pearl, with her extensive experience in Production Management at Pixar Animation Studios, brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. Together with Beech, a renowned South African comic book illustrator, they will share insights into the collaborative process of bringing this thrilling cinematic experience to life.

According to Dianne Makings, show director of CTIAF, “We are beyond excited to be hosting such incredible talent in Cape Town this year. It’s a testament to the growing reputation of South Africa as a hub for animation excellence.”

The CTIAF will take place alongside Comic Con Cape Town at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, offering attendees a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of animation and engage with industry experts.
