Strictly Soul has done it again, bringing together Mzansi and The rest of the continent’s vibrant R&B community for an unforgettable night of music, camaraderie, and style. The atmosphere at the recent Johannesburg edition was nothing short of electric, embodying the essence of Strictly Soul: building community, celebrating artistry, and providing a safe, empowering environment for all attendees. From the moment we walked in, it was clear this was more than an event—it was an experience rooted in a genuine love for R&B.
Founded by music director and resident DJ Akio Kawahito, Strictly Soul began as a simple Instagram Live stream during the pandemic, meant to connect and lift spirits through R&B. What started online soon evolved into South Africa’s first dedicated R&B party, launching as a live event in October 2020. Since then, Strictly Soul has grown across Africa, bringing soulful vibes from Cape Town to Nairobi and even Dar es Salaam. This growth has turned Strictly Soul into a pan-African cultural phenomenon, establishing it as the top R&B event series across the continent.
In true Strictly Soul fashion, the night offered a musical journey crafted by Akio himself, moving from relaxed, laid-back tunes to energetic Neo-Soul, Trap Soul, and even Soulful House tracks, designed to take the audience from gentle head-nodding to full-on dancing. Each beat, each transition, was a celebration of the many versions of R&B, from Old School and New School to Afrobeats and Future Beats.
The incredible Anita Makgetla hosted the evening, bringing warmth and charisma to every corner of the room. Her presence made everyone feel like they were part of a tight-knit family—a unique trait that has helped Strictly Soul become the go-to event for R&B lovers. Her effortless engagement with the crowd made it feel less like an event and more like a gathering of friends with a shared love for great music and positive vibes.
For those who missed the Johannesburg edition, there’s good news! Strictly Soul will be back in action with two more upcoming dates: on Thursday, November 21 at Rosebank in Johannesburg and Saturday, November 30 in Cape Town. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the scene, these events promise unforgettable nights of smooth R&B vibes, powerful community energy, and of course, the ever-refreshing Heineken Silver.
So mark your calendars and get ready to join the Strictly Soul family for another round of music, dancing, and soulful energy.
