Capetonians descended on Killarney Race Track on Sunday for a taste of true F1 speed and sound. The track was packed to capacity with 30 000 spectators lining the main straight, eager to catch a glimpse of the Red Bull F1 Showcar doing what it was built to do - burn rubber. Local BMX champ and two-wheel extraordinaire Brian Capper opened the show on his KTM stunt bike followed by a drifting demo by Ready D and the D1S Driftsquad. Former Red Bull Air Race pilot Glen Dell then took to the skies in his aerobatic Edge 500. Neel Jani, the young Swiss Red Bull Racing Test Driver who piloted the Red Bull show car on the track had this to say: "It's amazing to be here in Cape Town to run the F1 Showcar today, especially after Sebastian Vettel's victory in the Australian Grand Prix this morning." Not only that, the car also made a pre-trip down to Long Street. video over here:
Red Bull is quite well known for the epic events that they host, the last public one was the Red Bull Nighshift that saw almost 10,000 people rock up on Camps Bay to watch Jordy Smith and friends do some tow-in surfing. This weekend they are bringing in the Red Bull F1 show car that was racing during the last season and it will be putting on a show performance at the Killarney race track. It was supposed to have been held on Beach road in Tableview, but authorities shut them down apparently. Check out the video above. Gives goosebumps! There will also be some other activities like Ready D's drift team, possibly an air race and all the Red Bull you can drink.
Red Bull Street Style Finals in Cape Town This week on the 28th of April is the finals to the Red Bull Street Style competition, held in Cape Town. Click here for the full event details, or read a bit more about what "3 minutes, 2 players, 1 ball" means. Visit the Fanpage for more info, or check out the event page on Facebook. Street Style is all about the craziest soccer moves you can think of. It's like one-bounce, but with professionals. What sets this event apart is that, in typical Red Bull fashion, it's enormous. It's not just a couple of friends playing in a backyard. Red Bull is holding the event at the parade in Cape Town, and it's set to be another massive gathering of local football fans. As far as activations go, you should check this out. WIN TICKETS In order to make it easier to attend the event, we're giving away 2 sets of double tickets. It's quite simple really, all you need to do is COMMENT and LIKE this post and we'll pick the winner by Wednesday 12h. Your comment needs to include a Street Style move. Drop it like it's hot!
Finalist-Edward-Thomson-res Over the weekend Red Bull had an awesome activation event for the new Red Bull Street Style campaign currently running across South Africa. The event featured some of the top freestyle footballers in the Cape Town area. Red Bull have taken a very interesting approach with this new Street Style Campaign, utilising the main social networks as well as mobile tools to promote the events. It seems that there is virtually no traditional or above the line spend. It will be interesting to see how successful this approach is, especially as the social media space is really hotting up overseas but with few local campaigns embracing this new medium. The different properties on which they have marketed the event are mobile (USSD: *120*33009*739# and mobi site), blog as well as nicely integrated Facebook and Twitter pages. USSD is a very nice touch as it allows for mobile access without requiring a mobile connected phone. Red Bull also have Chris Njokwana, last years winner, helping to push the campaign on Twitter and Facebook. He also entered the Vodacom Fame campaign and received second place . The big question here is this the future of marketing? Would you add anything to this campaign? More images when you click through
Hippo Boutique Red Bull Room by Word of Art It's great seeing spaces that you wouldn't traditionally see street brands be in, actually welcome and facilitate a street culture. Established & Partners hooked us up with the Hippo Boutique Hotel's Red Bull Suite, which was put together by Ricky Gordon and the guys over at Word Of Art. The press release reads:
Hippo Boutique Hotel is proud to unveil the Red Bull Suite, a collaboration with the world's best selling energy drink and one of the hottest global brands. Given carte blanche to do what they wanted with the space, Red Bull brought in Cape Town agency Word of Art who conceptualised a room dedicated to the underground street cultures that Red Bull has supported for many years. Popular artists and illustrators Theory One, Faith47, Wesley Van Eedon, Maklone, Black Koki, 351073, Senyol, Elbow Grease, Toe007 and Warren Lewis created original artworks for the space. The final result is a fresh urban take on the Red Bull lifestyle and a hotel room that any hip urban dweller will feel right at home in.
Check out some more pics after the jump, or visit the Hippo Boutique website. The photos were all taken by Jonx Pillemer.
Red Bull Soweto Sessions This past weekend saw the Red Bull Soweto Sessions - a BMX event held at the Johannesburg cooling towers. While we don't know too much about the actual event, or what kind of brand activation was involved, it does look like a very cool event. We've managed to piece together a couple of snaps and a video we've found elsewhere on the web, but be sure to check out the website at the Red Bull Soweto Sessions microsite for more pics and videos. If you know Who Dunnit, please drop it in the comments. Also, check out some more pics at RiotBMX, or click through for a great video of the event (not produced by Red Bull). Thanks to Dylan for the headsup.
Ami Collective poster design for BC one
In this set we feature a couple of designs done by AmiCollective - a design collective based in Kloof Street, Cape Town. They've gone for a strongly illustrated design approach for the Red Bull creatives and a more "Cut and Paste" look with the Orange designs. I've had a look at the video promo they did for Red Bull and it was very cool. The clients are Red Bull BC One - the breakdance competition and Orange - the UK telephony operator.
