In a tribute to the passage of time, South African singer Tyla made a stunning debut at the 2024 Met Gala in New York, wearing a custom Balmain creation that captured the essence of the theme, “The Garden of Time” in an extraordinary way. The dress, meticulously crafted from sand and micro-crystals, was fitted to the millimeter based on a cast of her body, creating a breathtaking illusion of raw sculpted materials.
The dress, resembling sand through the hourglass, was not only a visual spectacle but also a delicate masterpiece. Tyla had to be carried up the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s steps to avoid damaging her gown’s organza-and-sand train, highlighting the fragility and artistry of the piece.
“We were looking to do something creative, something completely different for my first Met Gala,” Tyla says. “So when Balmain showed me the idea and sketch, I just knew it was perfect. The idea was crazy, and I loved it. I’m excited and a little nervous, but I’m looking forward to having a fun night at The Met!”
Says Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing, “Tyla pushes the boundaries of music in a similar way that I push the boundaries of fashion with Balmain”. He added, “I could not think of a better woman to wear this look that I feel is a manifestation of imagination, innovation, and the transformative power of art”.
The evening’s revelry saw the dress undergo its own transformation, gaining new slits and an abbreviated length. However, this only added to its allure, further embodying the theme of time’s passage.
Reports indicate that a hotel robe was on standby for Tyla inside the gala, ready to ensure her comfort in case of any mishaps, but the dress’s natural evolution seemed to align perfectly with the night’s narrative.
Tyla’s appearance at the Met Gala not only showcased her fashion-forward style but also put a spotlight on South African talent and creativity on a global stage. As a female artist representing South Africa, Tyla’s presence was a celebration of diversity and innovation in the world of haute couture, solidifying her place as a rising star in the industry.
Designed to tie in with the night’s “Garden of Time” dress code, Tyla’s look was completed with jewelry by Alexis Bittar and John Hardy, along with an hourglass-shaped purse by Balmain.
Despite its fragile nature, the dress added a touch of elegance and creativity to the event, garnering attention and praise from onlookers and commentators worldwide. Once again South Africa shines on the world stage.
