The Turbine Art Fair (TAF) is a unique South African Art fair ,started in 2013 by The Forum, that brings together exhibitors from around the SADC region to present, sell and celebrate works. The fair is the heart of emerging art in South Africa. TAF Presents a space for the showcasing of established and new talent in an environment that is immersive, accessible and inclusive.
This year’s Turbine Art Fair Grad Show, AT ODDS : in conflict or at variance is curated by Michaela Limberis and Siwa Mgoboza
What is the curatorial point of departure for this body of work?
As co-curators we were aware that our opinions and preferences in making this selection would likely be ‘at odds’, requiring continuous engagement through discord. We were pushed to comparatively question our own positionalities and ideas in response to the works, and we invite you to do the same.
Within the works at large there is also a sense of being AT ODDS with particular experiences, materials, realities, and/or ideas. We have all been subject to turbulent times in recent years, particularly throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges of limited access to their studios, critical feedback, peer review and material resources, these artists exhibit a pronounced independent drive and resourcefulness, resulting in the exceptional works presented here.
What value does the Grad Show provide?
The Turbine Art Fair GRAD SHOW platform offers a unique opportunity for these artists – otherwise unsupported in their transition from institution to market – to engage and network as professionals in the earliest stages of their career. Critical engagement and a viewing audience are central to building a sustainable practice. Without the ability to filter through minds and generate dialogue, the works sit idle without purpose.
This exhibition provides an overview of the current climate of production from institutions nationally in Bloemfontein, Gqeberha, Durban and Makhanda, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Stellenbosch.
