The Week in Music and Entertainment News

In case you missed it, here’s a roundup of the latest music and entertainment news happening locally and internationally.

A new song by Ricky Rick and friends

Ricky Rick’s family and record company have posthumously released a new single titled ‘Ilanga’ this week. Honouring his legacy two years after his passing, his family, along with Cotton Club Records in partnership with Sony, dropped the song, featuring Ricky Rick himself.

The amapiano track was recorded before his passing and features artists he was close to, including Tyler ICU, Young Stunna, Kelvin Momo, and Baby S.O.N., each adding their personal touch and dedication to the collaboration.

You can listen to the song on YouTube or download it from major digital streaming platforms.

Black Coffee turns 48

Grammy-award-winning DJ Black Coffee celebrated his 48th birthday on Monday, feeling grateful to reach this milestone after a tough incident earlier this year. Black Coffee underwent surgery for a spine injury following a scary flight to Argentina hit by violent turbulence.

Leading up to his birthday, the 48-year-old hosted a housewarming at his stylish Johannesburg home. Among the famous guests were Oskido, Julius Malema (hmm?), and Cassper Nyovest. Sharing photos and videos online, Black Coffee also gave a peek into his garage, to showcase his collection of luxury cars, including a Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, and Ferrari. (The cars are impressive, but what really got us cooing, was the cute pup!)

International punk rockers heading to SA

If you’re an 80s baby, get ready to rock out! It was announced this week that American (idiot) punk rockers Green Day and Offspring are heading to South Africa for the next Calabash concert in early 2025.

Tickets go on sale today (15 March) at Ticketmaster or Calabashsouthafrica.co.za.

Barbie’s Funeral

This week we witnessed Barbie’s funeral at the Academy Awards. Despite dominating headlines and scoring 8 Oscar nominations, Barbie only clinched one trophy for best song. The real surprise? Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig were left out altogether. But fear not, in true patriarchy fashion, Ryan Gosling saved the day with his smooth rendition of “I’m Just Ken,” featuring a surprise appearance by Guns ‘n Roses guitarist Slash.

If you missed the spectacle, catch the highlights in the video.
