BASKETBALL, CULTURE AND COMMUNITY: AN EVENING CELEBRATING THE NEW BALANCE 950

Bringing together creatives, media, tastemakers and members of the local basketball community, the evening celebrated the silhouette’s arrival through the shared language of culture, craftsmanship and community. New Balance, officially introduced the highly anticipated New Balance 950 to the South African market with an intimate launch experience at Kleinsky’s in Johannesburg.

To mark its South African debut, Archive created an experience that echoed the philosophy behind the shoe itself: that the strongest stories are built around people and the communities that shape them.

A Conversation Beyond Basketball

At the heart of the evening was a live conversation hosted by cultural commentator Kabelo Moremi, featuring Johannesburg Giants captain and South African basketball standout Arinze Nino Diketso Dim. Rather than focusing solely on performance, the discussion explored how basketball has become a cultural catalyst – shaping identity, inspiring creativity and building communities both on and off the court. The conversation reflected many of the values that sit at the centre of the New Balance 950: authenticity, craftsmanship and the pursuit of excellence.

Reflecting on the conversation, Dim shared that the principles which have shaped his career – discipline, consistency and performing under pressure – extend far beyond basketball. He noted that those same values influence how he approaches everyday life, making the New Balance 950 feel like a natural extension of basketball heritage into contemporary style and everyday wear.

As captain of the Johannesburg Giants in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) and South Africa’s current number one ranked FIBA 3×3 player, Dim’s journey embodied the evening’s broader conversation around dedication, community and personal expression.

Throughout the evening, guests experienced the New Balance 950 within an environment that celebrated Johannesburg’s growing creative and basketball communities. Music, food and immersive product moments encouraged guests to engage with the silhouette naturally, highlighting how the influence of basketball continues to shape fashion, art and youth culture across the city.

The launch echoed the global New Balance campaign featuring athlete Cooper Flagg and his brothers, which centres on family, authenticity and the personal relationships that define sport. While the global campaign explores those themes through family, the Johannesburg experience interpreted them through local community – showcasing how basketball continues to connect people across South Africa’s cultural landscape.
