Last week, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant world of Decorex Africa, a dynamic four-day celebration of design excellence that lit up the Sandton Convention Centre from August 1st to 4th. From the moment we stepped through the doors, it was clear that African design has reached new heights, brimming with innovation and creativity across every discipline.
A Cultural Outing Beyond Design
Decorex Africa has evolved into more than just an expo; it has become a cultural outing where friends and families gather to witness a spectacular array of art, design, furniture, interior decor, home technology, fashion, and more. This year, the event transformed into a hub of inspiration and excitement, offering a true feast for the senses.
Unveiling New Grounds and Innovations
The theme for this year’s show, “Designing for Impact,” resonated throughout the event, as we explored groundbreaking exhibits that highlighted sustainable practices and cutting-edge technologies. One standout was the Regenerate exhibition, curated by Anja Joubert and Decorex Africa’s Executive Creative Director Bielle Bellingham. This interactive display showcased the potential of circular design, featuring innovative materials and objects that promise a sustainable future. From bioplastic made from algae to recycling bins sourced through an industry-wide call-out, the exhibition was a powerful reminder of design’s role in co-creating a better world.
Designer of the Year: Tristan du Plessis
We were particularly excited to see the work of Tristan du Plessis, named Designer of the Year for Decorex Africa and 100% Design Africa. Du Plessis, an award-winning interior designer, brought his signature maximalist yet refined luxury to the show. His concept decor scheme was a visual delight, showcasing his global experience while highlighting local talent.
Infinity Surfaces and Elevated South African Furniture Design
Another highlight was the collaboration between Infinity Surfaces and four visionary local designers: Tanisha Neill, Mpho Vackier, Tshepo Sealetsa, and Walter Train. This exhibition presented elevated South African furniture design, blending heritage with futuristic inspirations to create pieces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Sip and Savor: 100% Design Restaurant
Amidst the design marvels, the centrally located 100% Design Restaurant by Wolkberg Casting Studio provided a perfect respite. Led by founder Ramielle de Jager, Wolkberg manufactures stunning handmade Limesite tiles, an engineered high-performance concrete material that gains strength over time. The restaurant not only satisfied our culinary cravings but also stood as a testament to the intersection of design and functionality.
Designer Rooms: A Source of Inspiration
Visitors were treated to a visual feast with the Designer Rooms curated by Cape Town-based design studio Studio Lloyd, furniture brand KINO, interior design studio Wythous Interiors, and Créma Design. These room sets were a treasure trove of decor inspiration, each showcasing the latest interior design trends and ideas.
Fresh Furniture Unveiled
Brands such as David Krynauw, MØDERNIST, and Karongwe Furniture unveiled show-stopping furniture pieces that captivated our imagination. Johannesburg-based label Joe Paine’s new outdoor range, Ridge Forrester, was particularly noteworthy, featuring picnic, camping, and overlanding furniture that challenged traditional notions of function and aesthetics.
100% Hospitality by Belgotex
A collaboration between leading floor manufacturer Belgotex and interior design studio HesseKleinloog resulted in 100% Hospitality by Belgotex. This exclusive exhibition brought the future of luxury hospitality to life, showcasing the expertise of design mavens Megan Hesse and Andrea Kleinloog, known for their work on Kruger Shalati Bridge House and Singita’s Kwitonda Lodge in Rwanda.
Future Talks: Insights from Industry Leaders
The dedicated Future Talks stage in the Future of Design exhibition area was a hive of activity, offering a series of free talks and collaborative workshops. Industry leaders like Tristan Du Plessis, Cassandra Twala, Koos Groenewald, and others shared their insights on the future of creativity and innovation, leaving us inspired and eager to see what lies ahead.
A Seamless Experience
Decorex Africa 2024 was more than just an exhibition; it was a celebration of design excellence and a testament to the boundless creativity and innovation thriving in Africa. For those who joined us, it was a journey into the heart of design. And for those who couldn’t, we hope this glimpse into our experience ignites a passion for the incredible world of African design.
