VOTE for Who Killed JR? for Kavinsky’s new single Nightcall!

Who Killed JR? is currently a contestant in a remix contest for Kavinsky’s new single Nightcall. The remix is up for the vote as we speak and the contest closes at the end of June.

“Kavinsky is the custodian of 80′s nostalgia in our modern music market and to show my appreciation for what he does I shied away from a heavy electro mix and went for the softer sound of the 80′s top ten hit with a hint of contemporary punch. From the subtle drive of Kavinsky’s robotic voice in the verse to the pure nostalgic pang of Love Foxx (CSS) pop lyrics in the chorus, this song was written for the children of the 80′s to whom the name Ewing actually means something and who have license to ask … who killed JR?”

Who Killed JR? remix Die Heuwels Fantasties’ song ‘Our Heritage’

Next of Kin Next of Kin

“I think the our Heritage remix is probably one of the most banging things I’ve ever heard coming out of SA!”  – Hunter Kennedy [Die Heuwels Fantasties]

Who Killed JR? is the remix project of David Anderson, composer and law student, who predominantly produces under the alias Next Of Kin with wingman James Smith. Who Killed JR? was born during the preparation of Next Of Kin’s live set for the 2009 Vice Magazine launch in Johannesburg where the duo decided to remix Daft Punk’s Robot Rock and Dire Straight’s Money for Nothing … it was a crowd pleaser – and so a monster was created.

Our Heritage Remix

‘Our Heritage’ by Die Heuwels Fantasties ft. The Soweto Gospel Choir, HHP & JR was composed for the Braai4Heritage Foundation to serve as the anthem for National Braai Day falling on the 24th of September annually. To enable a broader demographic to enjoy this anthem Who Killed JR? remixed Our Heritage for the Braai4Heritage Foundation in a style which can only be described as “french crossover” popularised by french record label Ed Banger Records. The reaction far exceeded expectation.

“The remix to me is something really special and kind of makes me feel the way I felt when I heard Justice for the first time.  Otherwise i love the idea of a mashup like this being pushed into a totally new direction by Who Killed JR..luvit!”  – Pierre Greeff [Die Heuwels Fantasties]

Johnny Foreigner & Yesterday's Pupil in studio

Genius!

A musical collaboration between Yesterday’s Pupil and Johnny Foreigner whilst the latter were down in SA a few weeks back.

Orchestrated by Red Bull, the track was recorded and mixed in the Red Bull studios in Cape Town. It’s a pretty hot track, give it a listen (download from the link to blog below).

machineri’s music video directed by Revel Fox

YouTube Preview Image

This is machineri’s second official music video, directed and shot by acclaimed South African director Revel Fox. Though produced on minimal budget, the raw quality combined with sharp editing by Robin Kress makes for the perfect vehicle for the band’s grimy sound.

Sannie Fox (vocals) and Andre Geldenhuys (guitar) met in 2007 through a mutual friend, though machineri would not take shape until some three years later. Their reputation as musical virtuosos each in their own capacity was testified through their very first performance being sold out in March 2010. The band has since played three more gigs to a packed house, and are evoking attention as wide as their sound is large. With machineri’s first video frequently being played on MTV locally and in Europe, it won’t be long before they are snatched from our little town by some big time blues label. (Please?)

Revel Fox’s latest feature film Long Street was released to an international audience in 2009, and stars daughter Sannie as well as wife Roberta Fox. It also features music by Sannie’s previous band Mama know nothing.

Eaton Crous is the man behind the legendary Homegrown flyers – I remember picking up the first one and going “Damn that’s a tight idea”. Apart from running pretty much all the visual stuff for the Drum & Bass outfit Counterstrike, he’s also done numerous other ads, amongst them the MK one’s that you’ve seen screening. Check out his latest work below, and also his Behance portfolio.
