As the countdown to Luxurious Marble Circus begins, the festival is taking shape as more than a gathering of music, fashion, art and culture. At the centre of that vision is Samurai Farai, who joins the festival as its inaugural Cultural Curator, helping shape the cultural perspective, conversations and experiences that will define this year’s edition.
Samurai Farai’s appointment speaks to a growing shift in how contemporary African festivals are being imagined: not simply as stages for entertainment, but as spaces where culture can be explored, challenged and experienced in its many forms.
“What it means to me truly is just another wonderful accolade. I think, for us as a nation, and for myself as an independent visual artist, to kind of just stamp that we have the cultural tenacity to kind of expand and exist in multifaceted, multicultural, and multi-experiential levels.” He speaks on what this opportunity means to him.
As Cultural Curator, Furai brings a perspective rooted in culture, creativity and the people who continuously move those worlds forward. His role is to help close the event on Saturday and Sunday. Showcasing an environment that reflects the complexity of contemporary African culture, connecting established voices with emerging talent and creating space for ideas that exist across music, fashion, art, design and creative expression.
“I think what it means to me is that I’m showing and pioneering the fact that you know our visual artistry as South Africans has the power to kind of now curate infrastructure and architecture for for people to experience art at this level, and I think that feeds into the second question, which is, what does this role allow me to bring to the festival?”-Samurai Farai
For The Luxurious Marble Circus, that cultural layer is particularly important. The festival has positioned itself around an intersection of luxury, creativity and contemporary African expression, creating an environment where different creative disciplines can collide. “LMC sits at the intersection of music, fashion, art, and contemporary culture. What cultural conversations, people, or ideas do you feel are important to bring into this year’s festival? Man, I think you know the festival will attract people organically, right? And what I mean by that is, I think the festival offers an extremely unique cultural experience, and the people who will be drawn to that are most really like the most colorful South Africans.”
Furai’s involvement adds another dimension to that ambition. “You know, I love the idea of all walks of life and people organically coming together. You know, corporate people, athletes, lawyers, accountants, performers, all faculties, kind of intermingling, I guess, in a fantastical landscape. You know, showing us again that what really connects us, like the common thread, is our sense of expression and creativity.”

You know, people in entertainment, in arts and culture are really going out of their way To you know, put in immense time, labor, and resources to create environments for art, creativity, expression, fashion, culture, and music to exist cohesively.”-Samurai Farai
With the festival now approaching, the appointment of its first Cultural Curator signals an intention to make this edition about more than a line-up. It is about creating a cultural moment that reflects where African creativity is now and where it could be going next.
“You know, I guess from my performance, quite selfishly, what I love, what I would love for people to take away from it is just again showing that fine art, visual art, is is so much larger than just the gallery and the art industry in its traditional sense, and that visual artists need to consider and be able to visualise themselves as actually, you know, helping build architecture infrastructure and having the ability to actually mould and put our own creativity into these infrastructures that surround us.” -Samurai Farai
And with Samurai Farai helping to shape that conversation, the countdown to The Luxurious Marble Circus is also a countdown to seeing what happens when culture becomes part of the architecture of the festival itself.
