ASICS Sportstyle collaborated with Helon Melon at South African Fashion Week, bringing together sneakers, fashion and local design in Johannesburg.
ASICS Sportstyle recently stepped into the cultural conversation at South African Fashion Week through a collaboration with Cape Town designer and founder Helen Melon of Helon Melon, bringing together performance led design and a distinctly local creative perspective.
Set within Johannesburg’s evolving fashion landscape, the collaboration explored the intersection of sport, style and identity, positioning ASICS Sportstyle not only as a global performance brand, but as one that continues to resonate within contemporary fashion and youth culture.

With nearly 32 years of considered craftsmanship behind her, Helen has built Helon Melon into one of South Africa’s most enduring fashion brands. Known for working with natural fabrics, a timeless and honest design sensibility, and an unwavering commitment to quality, her work carries a distinctly human heart deeply local in spirit, yet recognised far beyond South Africa’s borders.
For SA Fashion Week, Helon Melon reinterpreted ASICS Sportstyle through her own lens, pairing her signature aesthetic with the brand’s iconic footwear to create looks that felt effortless, directional and rooted in self-expression.

“What drew me to ASICS is that there is a real alignment in values,” says Helen.
“Some of my work carries a subtle Japanese influence, and I’ve always admired the way Japanese design and manufacturing place such a strong emphasis on longevity and thoughtful construction. I felt that ASICS and Helon Melon could express themselves very well together because we both value materials, construction, and lasting quality first. That made the collaboration feel natural and exciting.” – Helen Melon

The partnership speaks to a broader shift within fashion, where the lines between sport and style continue to blur. Sneakers are no longer just functional, they are central to how a new generation defines personal style.
“Helon Melon has always been about more than clothing,” Helen adds.
“The message of this collaboration was clear: comfort comes first. Before you choose your wardrobe, you should consider how comfortable you are going to be in it. That balance between the comfort of the ASICS shoe and the strength of our garments worked incredibly well, and it became one of my favourite moments in the showcase.”

Through this collaboration, ASICS Sportstyle continues to deepen its connection to local creative communities, aligning with designers who are shaping the future of fashion in South Africa. It reflects a growing focus on storytelling, cultural relevance and the role of style as an extension of identity.
As SA Fashion Week continues to spotlight the next wave of South African talent, collaborations like this highlight the importance of supporting and amplifying local voices, creating space for new narratives to emerge.
