On 18 July, one of London’s most recognisable public spaces will echo with the sounds of South Africa as Trafalgar Square transforms into a celebration of music, memory and nationhood for Nelson Mandela Day.
Commemorating both Nelson Mandela Day and the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s Constitution, the free public concert will bring together an impressive lineup of South African artists, cultural leaders and audiences from across the world in a powerful tribute to the country’s democratic journey and enduring creative spirit.
Leading the celebrations are acclaimed artists Sjava, Jesse Clegg, Msaki, Sun El Musician, Thakzin and Sipho Mchunu, with additional performers expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Together, they will present an evening that celebrates not only South African music but also the stories, resilience and shared identity that continue to connect people across borders.
At the heart of the event is Scatterlings, a cultural movement inspired by the legendary song Scatterlings of Africa, originally created by Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu. More than a musical project, Scatterlings represents belonging, cultural exchange and the ties that unite generations through storytelling and song.

Jesse Clegg and Msaki, who have become leading voices of the movement, will be joined by Sipho Mchunu of Juluka fame to honour the legacy of the original work while introducing its message to new audiences.
“This is a love letter to South Africa and to every South African who has ever carried their identity far from home,” said Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie. “On 18 July, at Trafalgar Square, we are not just celebrating Mandela’s legacy. We are living it.”
For Jesse Clegg, the performance carries both personal and cultural significance.
“Scatterlings is about connection between people, cultures and generations. To bring this music and message to Trafalgar Square on Nelson Mandela Day is incredibly meaningful and a chance to celebrate South Africa with the world.”
The choice of Trafalgar Square is particularly symbolic. Long associated with global solidarity movements, including anti-apartheid demonstrations, the historic square stands as a reminder of international support for South Africa’s struggle for freedom. Hosting a celebration of South African culture in this space reflects how far the nation has travelled while acknowledging the legacy that continues to inspire people around the world.
The London concert also serves as the opening chapter of a broader cultural celebration. Just weeks later, on 1 August, Scatterlings returns home with its inaugural music festival at Johannesburg’s Huddle Park, bringing together another stellar lineup featuring Zakes Bantwini, Sjava, Msaki, Sun El Musician, Jesse Clegg, Sminofu, J’Something, Jabulile Majola, MUZI, Simmy & Kenza and TRESOR.
As the world gathers to honour Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy, Trafalgar Square will become a place where history, culture and music converge, reminding audiences that South Africa’s greatest export has always been its ability to inspire hope, unity and humanity through its people.
